HM Revenue - Tax Credits
HMRC's online services are a quick and convenient way for you or your authorised agents to deal with a whole range of tax, excise and benefit related issues. The information below has been adapted from http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/. For more information, visit the website directly.
From April 2004
For the eldest or only child, £16.50 each week.
For each additional child, £11.05 each week.
Higher rate of Child Benefit
A higher rate of Child Benefit is paid for the eldest child in a family. If two families join together to become one family, the higher rate of Child Benefit will only be paid for the eldest child in the new family.
If your partner is getting Child Benefit in their own name you need to tell us about this on the claim form so we can decide which one of you will get the higher rate for the eldest child.
We use partner to mean a person you are married to or a person you are living with as if you are married to them.
Some people who have been bringing up children on their own since before 5 July 1998 may get Child Benefit (Lone Parent). This is a higher rate of Child Benefit paid for the eldest child of lone parents. The higher rate is £17.55 each week, instead of £16.50 for an eldest.
